The Sobey Cancer Support Centre Now Open 24/7 For Cancer Patients

Posted on June 20, 2018

Halifax – June 20, 2018 — The Canadian Cancer Society will now open its doors full time for patients who must travel to Halifax for their cancer treatment. Previously, the Sobey Cancer Support Centre was available Monday to Friday to address an unmet need for patient accommodations during treatment. Expanded access to free accommodations, emotional supports, and other programming at the Dr. Susan K. Roberts Lodge That Gives will better prepare people to fight their disease.

“Reducing the burden of cancer is an important goal of the Canadian Cancer Society,” said Jane Parsons, Regional Executive Director – Atlantic Canada. “Patients, their families, and caregivers shouldn’t have to worry about their accommodations and finding supports during their treatment. We can be their home away from home and their extended support network during this challenging time.”

In addition to providing accommodation for the duration of their treatment, patients can also access the Steve and Kathy Smith Programming and Wellness Area. Anyone receiving cancer treatment can use the programming, quiet rooms, exercise rooms, common area, and the respite day area. Additionally, CCS offers services such as wig fitting on the weekend, now that the centre will be open.

“All the support, kindness, generosity, and love is as important a part of my recovery – I believe – as is the radiation treatment I’m receiving,” wrote a recent guest at The Lodge That Gives. “I am extremely grateful that I was not required to pay for my lodging, meals, or transportation. The Lodge That Gives, certainly does!”

“The news today of our expanded hours is the result of the continued and generous support of our donors,” said Parsons. “We know without doubt the need is there, as patients have long expressed their desire to stay at the Lodge throughout the weekend. In fact, we already have bookings confirmed for the first weekend we are open.”
